October 1, 2008 Hey Mom, what’s for dinner? Answering this question can be especially tough for parents of a child with dietary restrictions. For Rachel Carlyle-Gautthier, the struggle to find gluten-free foods for her daughter turned into a successful business venture. Rachel’s foray into the gluten-free world began after her youngest daughter was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance. Because the available gluten-free flours and recipes were not very appetizing, Rachel began experimenting on her own with wheat flour substitutes and new recipes. As favorable comments came pouring in from friends and relatives, Rachel realized she had a marketable product. But she needed guidance in turning that product into a successful business. Enter MCDC. Rachel worked closely with MCDC to establish production, distribution and marketing strategies. She then turned to MCDC for financing help. MCDC provided Gluten Free Mama with a rural enterprise loan to restructure current business debt and a line of working capital for inventory and expansion costs. Don’t be surprised to see Gluten Free Mama products at your local grocery store. Twenty-nine grocery stores throughout Montana, Idaho and Washington currently sell the Gluten Free Mama products. Customers say that Rachel’s flour mixes stand apart from other gluten-free products because of their similarity to regular flour in taste, texture and recipe ratio. The product line includes base flour mixes as well as a pancake and pizza crust mix and a gluten-free cookbook written by Rachel. The cookbook was so well received, Rachel is working on a sequel. Her collection of old family recipes converted to gluten-free continues to provide an alternative answer to the age old question of what’s for dinner. As Rachel will tell you, Gluten Free Mama would not be the success it is today without MCDC. MCDC’s assistance with the vision, planning, branding and financing of Gluten Free Mama set Rachel on the road to success. With MCDC’s help, another rural Montanan has turned her entrepreneurial spirit into a livable success for herself, her family and her community. |
